When Jeremiah J. McMahon started his home services and remodeling business in 1954, he had no way to predict how successful this business would become many decades later.

Today, McMahon Services and Construction is a leader in its field, which now includes fire, smoke and water restoration, roofing and siding, and mold remediation, as well as construction and remodeling.

The Hainesville, IL firm serves northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin homeowners as a “Preferred Contractor”, an honored status designated by leading insurance companies.

At the heart of McMahon Service is Office Administrator Kristy Maravina, usually the first voice callers hear on the other end of the line.

Kristy comes from a long line of veterans: grandfather, father and uncle. She understands the concept of service and serving others. “We go out of our way to help our customers and to give back to the community,” Kristy said. “Sometimes that’s just giving friendly advice to a widow trying to solve a home maintenance problem. And sometimes it’s volunteering to help veterans and their families when they need help with an housing issue.”

For example, several McMahon staff members arrived at the home of Gold Star Mother Maria Hughes who lives by herself. The team cleaned gutters, repaired front steps, fixed a fence, sealed a basement, fixed both patio and garage doors and rewired a dimmer switch. “Everyone from McMahon was extremely polite and very efficient,” Maria said.

The work on Maria’s home was part of Lake County Veteran and Family Service Foundation’s new Home Improvement Program.

“Not every Veteran or family member has the physical or financial resources to maintain their homes,” explained LCVFSF President Paul Baffico. “We work with fine firms like McMahon Services to help address home issues challenging Veterans and their families.”

“For us, this is a way of giving back to the community that supports our business, Kristy said. “We’d like to lead the way and be an example to other business to reach out and help others. I think this is the spirit that makes a community a true community.”
